We are not under the law anymore! We do not have to keep all of the commandments that were given in the Old Testament to have a relationship with God. We are children of the New Covenant. This covenant is governed by the law of love. Jesus gave us one – only one – commandment to live by. He said:

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. (John 13:34-35)

If we are to love one another as Jesus has loved us, then we need to know how Jesus has loved us. We need to receive His love first. We can’t give away what we don’t have. If I asked you to give away a million rand, could you do it? Probably not. Why? Because you probably don’t have a million rand. You first need to receive the money before you can give it away. It’s the same with God’s love.

We first need to receive God’s love before we can love others. This is exactly how Jesus lived His life. In John 15:9 He said: “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.” Jesus was able to love us because He first received love from His Father. We are to follow His example. As we come to know and believe the love that God has for us our love for others is made perfect (1 John 4:16-17).

The Christian life is not about trying to love God more – it’s all about discovering how much He loves you. He demonstrated His love for you by sending Jesus to die for you while you were still a sinner (Romans 5:8).
